Dems So Mad They Could Hsu

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 31 August 2007

No one really knows where he lives. Certainly not in the little green ranch house attached to his name; not with his deep pockets. No one really even knows where his money comes from. And they definitely don't know where he has been. What is clear is he hasn't been in the California prison where he was facing up to three years. He skipped court and hasn't been seen again. Where in the world is Norman Hsu?

Besides the pockets of the Democrats, to whom he's been giving an inordinate amount over the past few years, he donated to nearly everybody: Clinton, Obama, Spitzer, Cuomo — even the New School. And that was his rep — no one knew anything about him, but as the NYT reports, he "certainly had a strong reputation" for being able to put big dollars in politicians' pockets.

John Liu told the Times that he met Hsu a few months ago at a gathering of Asian Americans for Clinton down in D.C.  "He actually told me he doesn't get involved in municipal elections the first time I met him, but then he went ahead and gave to my campaign and others," Liu said.  Adding quickly that he refunded every dime of the $4,950 donation.

Hsu is now at the center of an embarrassing political scandal, leaving all the politicians who accepted his donations foundering. Clinton and co. have sought to rid themselves of the cash; severing all ties to the man still wanted for the fraud case in California. Hsu could turn himself in as early as today in San Mateo County, the LAT reports, where a hearing on the matter has been scheduled.

That would clear up a lot of questions. Jeralyn at TalkLeft has been doing all the recon work on Hsu, but they've been coming up blank. Unless he's the Norman Hsu of Cleveland, Ohio, or the Hacienda Heights City Council member in disguise, there's no voter record for a Norman Hsu ... anywhere. And for all this international travel he's been doing, why haven't his arrest warrants come up in the system?  So much for airport security.

GetawayPundit's got the real scoop, though, courtesy of WSJ: It seems American politicians weren't the only potential leaders he's been giving to.  In fact, he was named in a 1996 donations scandal — for giving to the Chinese Communist Party.  Now there's a frighteningly familiar mantra — the supposed Clinton-China connection the GOP couldn't stop talking about in the late '90s?  Now with money on the table, can Hillary fight it like her husband did?
