Trent Lott to resign
CNN, Fox News and MSNBC have been told that Trent Lott will announce today that he is resigning from the Senate. He will be the sixth Republican to do so this session. He has scheduled two press conferences in Mississippi later today where the formal announcemements are expected to come. Miss. Governor Haley Barbour will apoint Lott's successor. MSNBC speculates that:
While the exact reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress. link
