Yes, Virginia, There Is a Constitution

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 29 November 2007

No independent thought for Virginia Republicans, at least if the state Republican party has their way. According to The Roanoke Times, "the Republican party has no interest in thoughtful voters. It only wants mindless party loyalists who will vote Republican no matter what." The slam is their response to the new VA GOP policy that was approved by the State Board of Elections earlier this week: if you want to vote in the primary, you must sign a loyalty oath swearing your intent to vote in November for the party's nominee - whomever he is.

Since Virginia's turning into the newest battleground state, you can't help but catch the Revolution and wonder: which side are they scared to lose? Their left, or their right?

The RT postulates the options:

  • Lie. Virginia's ballots are still secret; no one will know if you vote against the party nominee.
  • Stay home from the Feb. 12 election and keep your options open.
  • Commit to an unknown Republican candidate nine months before the election.

Seriously, great choices. Yes, Virginia, there is a constitution. It just doesn't seem to apply in VA, where, clearly, responsible voting doesn't either.

Our response? What a great way to create some democrats. Should Hillary be saying thank you?
