What the Huck

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 30 November 2007

The Anti-Immigration Right doesn't have its candidate yet, but they are sure who it isn't: Mike Huckabee.  At this point, you've probably intuited my infatuation and realized that I heart Huckabee, I just hate his policy.  Except on this one.

Huck at the debates:
"Our country is better than that, to punish children for what their parents did in breaking the law. If that costs me the election, it costs me the election, but somewhere along the line we cannot just pander to the anger and hostility without challenging it."

Those aren't winning words, particularly for someone whose side of the political aisle usually panders towards that anger and hostility - especialy gropus like NumbersUSA and 9-11 Families for America, a group influential in fighting the REAL ID Act.  You know, the groups the Right always panders to.

According to the Washington Times, Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, says that there's no way Huckabee will be their man.  "He was an absolute disaster on immigration as governor.  Every time there was any enforcement in his state, he took the side of the illegal aliens."

Or as Huck would put it, he took the side of reason and compassion.  A far cry from his colleagues on the right, which makes me wonder, in this values voters frenzy, where have all the compassionate Christian conservatives gone?
