Col. Davis Resigns, Writes LAT Op-Ed: AWOL Military Justice

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 11 December 2007

An interesting Op-Ed appeared in today's LAT: "AWOL Military Justice," by the former Pentagon chief war crimes prosecutor. He says:

"I was the chief prosecutor for the military commissions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, until Oct. 4, the day I concluded that full, fair and open trials were not possible under the current system. I resigned on that day because I felt that the system had become deeply politicized and that I could no longer do my job effectively or responsibly."

And we can presume he would have said more if he had been able to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning, but the DOD refused to let him appear.

"I think this is a real shame," Sen. Dianne Feinstein said about his absence. "Unfortunately I have to conclude that by prohibiting Col. Davis from testifying, the Administration is trying to stop a fair and open discussion about the legal rights of detainees at Guantanamo."

Open and fair discussion? That makes fair and balanced look easy. Think Progress has more.pentagon, Feinstein, col davis, war crimes, lat oped
