Dodd heads filibuster on FISA bill
"The President has said that American lives will be sacrificed if Congress does not change FISA. But he has also said that he will veto any FISA bill that does not grant retro-active immunity. No immunity, no FISA bill. So if we take the President at his word, he's willing to let Americans die to protect the phone companies." - Ted Kennedy on the Senate floor
The uproar over the FISA bill has begun, and, well, I was hoping for more of an uproar. Senator Chris Dodd is filibustering the bill, but it leaves everyone wondering about all the other Democrats that earned their spots in the House and Senate under the promise of standing up to power.
The last real filibuster was 15 years ago in 1992, ever since then the threat of a filibuster was enough to force compromise on a bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, however, made it perfectly clear that Dodd will be following through on his threat - there would be no compromise.
Support for the filibuster has been announced by Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Russ Feingold - unfortunately for Dodd, they are all in Iowa.
Head over to CSPAN2 for a glimpse of the first real filibuster in over a decade, and send some e-mails to Senators expressing disappointment over their preference for telecom companies over your civil liberties.
