8 Days Left... Miles to Go

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 26 December 2007

Helping hands are few in Iowa right now as the earliest-ever primaries come right during students' holiday break and usually active student volunteers return home for the holidays.

Romney leads the GOP in the 18-29 set in Iowa, and Obama has a fierce command on those under 35. According to the Des Moines Register, he has the support of 48 percent of younger Iowans while Hillary Clinton only has 19 percent. With the battles fierce, campaigns are forced to work around students' winter breaks and familys' holiday schedules and are trying to shift their geographical focus from college towns to hometowns.

"We'll capture the enthusiasm that would have been on campus and will have them apply it in their home towns," Tim Albrecht, a spokesman for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, told Reuters.

"As far as out-of-state students, we will take any and all who want to come here to volunteer for the caucuses," he said.
