He's Not a Candidate (He's Just Feeling Out the Field)

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 15 January 2008

Michael Bloomberg is getting annoyed by all the questions. And now he says that any speculation of a presidential run is flat-out "ridiculous." In a press conference yesterday, a frustrated New York Mayor told reporters, "I've said this before. You would think that people would get tired of the answer. I'm not a candidate for president of the United States."

But in the world of news media, that doesn't mean he's not running, either.

Last week, a source close to the two-term mayor - a billionaire who could finance a late-starting presidential campaign himself - said that poll data assessing Bloomberg's chances had been collected, but not yet analyzed, and that Bloomberg might make his decision on a presidential run by early March.

At which point the race will have gotten narrow enough that the press would probably welcome the injection of another character into the field. Especially one who is known for playing Santa Claus; in 2007 alone, Bloomberg gave away $205 million. If the speculation over his potential run is already this "ridiculous," just imagine the field day the media would have if he put his hat in: Mr. Mayor, Mr. Mayor, how will you fix health care, are you going to finance universal health care yourself?
