Lights Out in Gaza

From the NYT:
JERUSALEM — Israel’s closing of its border crossings with Gaza remained in effect Sunday, and Gaza’s only electricity plant shut down because of a shortage of imported fuel needed to run it.
Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, ordered a temporary halt on all imports into the Hamas-run Gaza Strip late last week. The measure, along with stepped-up military operations in Gaza, was meant to persuade Palestinian militants there to stop firing rockets at Israel.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Barak said Sunday that the decision would most likely be re-evaluated in a few days.
In the meantime, Gaza is emerged in uncertain Hell. In an area where power means everything - not just your light switch, but getting running water to your home - suddenly, there is no sewage treatment, no water, no functioning hospitals to tend the sick.
In a mass email, activist Ronald McGuire said:
Hamas reports that the Israeli lock down of the Gaza strip and the boycott of fuel shipments has caused the deaths of five hospital patients because Gaza's only power plant had to shut down for lack of fuel. As blackness covers Gaza City the IDF continues its campaign of murder that continues to kill noncombatant civilians and deliberately targets male Palestinian youths who are not engaged in hostile action simply because Israel "believes" that the youths may be members of militant groups.
For a reprisal already condemned by the UN, there is surprisingly little U.S. coverage. Moreover, none of the presidential candidates has yet addressed this latest unrest in the battle for peace in the Middle East. And Bush's reaction? Right. That peace plan is going so smoothly.
