Live Blogging SOTU

POSTED BY Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith, 28 January 2008

Or, The Sitting Duck Quacks

Join us tonight for live blogging with our newest writer, Michael Roston, during Bush's seventh and final State of the Union address. Expect to hear about the economy (don't worry, it'll be fine), the surge (we're winning!), prevention of terrorism (tapping phones of bad guys only, we promise), and education ($$$).

[N.B.: He'll leave out the part about how throwing money at a problem only makes a more expensive problem.]

A little SOTU light reading, though, to get you ready:

The Detroit Free Press put together a great mash-up of W's Promises Made in past States of the Union and then What Actually Happened.

Clean air and climate change

What he said: In 2003 and 2005, Bush pushed to pass his Clear Skies Initiative, which he said would cut air pollution from power plants by 70% over 15 years and improve Americans' health.

What happened: Congress never passed Bush's plan and he dropped it because of a lack of support.

What's next: Congress is working to pass legislation to limit global-warming gasses. No major clean air legislation has been passed, but the Environmental Protection Agency is under a court order to decide by March whether to adopt tougher regulations to reduce smog.

Fun.

CBS has more on how the surge is "working," look to USA Today for info on the "sustained attention" Bush says we'll have on the economy, and the Baltimore Sun has the scoop on the Democrat's follow-up by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
