McCain: Front Runner

POSTED BY Marc Boxser, 29 January 2008

ABC calls it- tomorrow Giuliani drops out and endorses McCain. In his victory speech McCain invoked Reagan and speaks highly of his oponents. One question- if McCain is the GOP front runner going into Super Tuesday, is this good or bad for Obama? I think good for Obama- dems think that a divisive figure like Clinton will hemorrhage independents to the GOP, and risk losing what looks like a sure fire Democrat victory.

Many dems are talking about this as an opportunity to create a lasting Democratic majority in this country. But if McCain wins the nomination- does that mean that in some way this 'democratic majority', in traditional terms, already exists? Basically that what we are really looking at is a move accross the board, including within the GOP, away from conservatism. The GOP in 2008 takes a step back from the marriage with hard line (read religious) conservatism it has enjoyed for the past two decades, and becomes attractive to traditional fiscal conservatives turned off by the Bush presidency. Hard core Conservatism , already turned off by the few returns political horse trading has gotten them begins to take a back seat in US politics? Maybe not.. Here is the victory speech:
