Richardson to Endorse Obama

POSTED BY Chris Broussard, 21 March 2008

Just about everyone is reporting that Bill Richardson is announcing his endorsement of Obama at a campaign rally on Oregon on Friday.

Richardson is the Hispanic Governor of New Mexico who dropped out of the Democratic race for the presidential nomination in January. He's be discussed for the Vice President spot on both campaigns and his endorsement has been much sought by both Obama and Hillary. His own campaign was probably most notable for his tongue-in-cheek job interview campaign ads and his vehement advocacy of immediate withdrawl from Iraq.

The question in my mind is, "Why now?"  The last couple news and polling cycles haven't been too good for Obama, so what made Richardson decide?  It seems to me that either:

  • Richardson was so impressed by the Tuesday race speech that it swung him to Obama, or
  • Obama's campaign is really needing something good in the news, and they finally broke down and promised Richardson the V.P. spot.

That would add an interesting undercurrent to all the Dream Ticket discussion last week and explain more fully why Obama's campaign was so demonstratively opposed.  They would find it difficult to use the possibility of a V.P. spot as inducement for endorsement if the entire party was clamoring for the Dream Ticket.

On a lighter note, it seems Richardson favors the guy who gives him the answer more than his football buddy.
