Clinton's hospital story was accurate

POSTED BY Alexandra Steigrad, 08 April 2008

A quick break from the Petraeus hearing. Over the weekend, Hillary Clinton took some heat over reports that a story she had been telling on the stump about the tragic death of an uninsured woman was false. Now, however, the Washington Post is reporting that Clinton's story was, in fact, accurate. The main point of contention was that the patient did have insurance, but upon closer inspection, the young woman, who had lost her baby and then her own life, was in debt/ uninsured and was turned away by a local hospital, as Clinton recounted. The nuanced difference is that the woman was a patient at two different hospitals, and just before she died, she was treated at a second hospital and obtained insurance. It's a little convoluted, but it proves that Clinton did not lie.

On Hardball last night, Chris Matthews dedicated an entire segment to this supposed lie, without fact-checking its veracity himself. It's stunningly ironic that some journalists have no qualms branding Hillary a liar, while overlooking the golden rule of reporting, namely to check your facts. Here's a clip of CNN's original take of the fiasco.
