Clinton tackles crime
When Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was running for office, he pledged to reduce crime significantly. This was, of course, welcomed in Philly, a city that recorded 392 homicides last year alone. Today, according to the L.A. Times, Hillary Clinton is backing Nutter's pledge by proposing 100,000 new police officers on the streets of Philly. This is part of a $4 billion/year anti-crime package. While Hillary is in Pa., Obama is in Indiana speaking out against big corporate salaries. Read more here. Why is this important? One of the reasons Nutter was elected was because of this hard stance on crime. The mayor, who is wildly popular, is creating a sort of renaissance for the City of Brotherly Love, and Pennsylvania as a whole. Such a crime bill speaks volumes about how Clinton understands the Keystone State because she is talking bread and butter issues. The Huffington Post had an interesting post from a reporter who has been following Obama in Pa. The entry hints at some of Obama's problems with blue collar voters, and how he is talking more about more abstract concepts. Despite what the polls say now, I expect some kind of Clinton surge come voting day, especially because Obama has seemingly moved on to other states that vote after April 22... but I've been wrong before.
