Out of retirement
Don't call it a comeback, he's been here for years. Seriously, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright is the pastor that won't go away. Senator Obama has tried his best to shake Wright's rantings loose from his campaign, and whether or not he succeeded this month in the run-up to Pennsylvania was up for debate. But maybe April's showers brought May's flowering of more news on Wright, and we're seeing that his speech at a Detroit NAACP event last night is getting national attention. Just in time for Obama's fight for his political future in Indiana and North Carolina.
Over at Fox News they must be giddy - they get to play "God Damn America" one more time, and imagine again that it's relevant.
To make it worse, this morning he showed up at the National Press Club in Washington, the place you go when you want everyone in the world to hear what you have to say, and said that people who are attacking his words are attacking the holiest of black institutions- their churches. This doesn't really match up with the message that Senator Obama delievered in Philadelphia all those weeks ago.
There could be two things going on here. Wright might be pissed at Obama - the prodigal son who effectively disowned him (and therefore his white grandmother) in front of the largely white audience of ABC's The View, and hardly defended the church he's still a member of and that Wright built. This payback ain't too tasty.
On the other hand, maybe Wright is doing Obama a favor. Just because they move the pastor to Alaska doesn't mean that "God Damn America" speech is going to go away. As I argued in that blog post, the Republican attack machine will make this issue about race - they will deploy an army of surrogates to say you don't want to elect a crazy black man and his crazy minister to the White House. Wright may be saying to Obama, "I'm keeping my head up because you're going to have to find another way to fight this onslaught."
If Obama gets that message it's possible he just might make it through the spring.
