  • Game changer for Obama

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 06 2008 09:43 PM | PERMALINK

CBS News may have called Indiana for Clinton--which is still debatable--but she got trounced in North Carolina, and she didn't do what she needed to do, namely keep it close in North Carolina and win convincingly in Indiana. Obama has found his voice again, giving a speech that reached out to Clinton supporters, while also lifting up the Democratic party. We'll see what Clinton says, and what the final totals are, but it's apparent that Obama withstood a few tough weeks, and overperformed expectations....

  • Are 'old politics' contagious?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 06 2008 04:38 PM | PERMALINK

Apparently it is! You know this protracted argument about whether Hillary's gas tax proposal constitutes pandering? While Hillary calls it short-term relief, Obama calls it old politics. Either way, it seems that Obama's campaign has misquoted New York Times columnist and economist, Paul Krugman, in their TV attack ad, implying that Clinton's plan would increase oil industry profits. Oh, the irony- using old politics to attack old politics. ABC News:

As we recently fact-checked, Sen. Barack...

  • What does early reporting on tonight's primaries tell us?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 06 2008 03:00 PM | PERMALINK

Something big could happen tonight to change the course of the Democratic nomination, but the feeling that's in the air is most likely just that--a feeling. After a long back-and-forth in the primary battle, I am more inclined to believe that many are feeling anxiety/anticipation rather than an actual game-changing moment. We all want to know when this thing is going to break. Is Hillary going to really shift the momentum in this race? Can Obama close the deal and sew this thing up?

  • Change Rocks in North Carolina

POSTED BY MALCOLM RAY, MAY 06 2008 10:41 AM | PERMALINK

From the progressive center of North Carolina comes this report from Brian Russell of yesh.com. He explores why music and politics go hand in hand, why young people get "it", and how music can change the world.

On Friday May 2 the Obama campaign held a free get out the vote event called Change Rocks. On this day it was held in Carrboro, NC, a small town just west of Chapel Hill. The outdoor rock concert featured local indie rock band Superchunk and the hotness of the moment Arcade Fire. It was...

Sunday Show Roundup: Gas Tax Holiday (From Reality)

Your Daily Politics Video Blog: Hillary Cinton took to the Sunday show airwaves to defend her gas tax holiday against Senator Obama and all those elitist, out-of-touch economists.

  • Guam recount is "imminent"

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 03 2008 10:32 PM | PERMALINK

    From the Pacific News Center:

    Officials Say Recount Is 'Imminent'

Guam - The Democrat Party Nominating Committee said officials will look over the large amount of "spoiled ballots" in the coming days.

At issue is the small margin of victory of Senator Barack Obama. He beat his rival, Senator Hillary Clinton by 7 votes, but well over 500 ballots were deemed invalid during the tabulation process.

Herbie Perez, chairman of the nominating committee, said she will not certify the results because...

  • Clinton's ace in the hole

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 03 2008 10:02 PM | PERMALINK

The LA Times has a great profile of Clinton's North Carolina director Ace Smith. Part Michael Corleone, part Darth Vader, Smith is both feared and respected for his masterful ability to put together votes and deliver big victories. Smith is the man who helped Clinton clinch big wins in California and Texas. If you have any interest in campaign strategy, check out the story below.

  • Obama wins the Guam caucuses by just 7 votes

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 03 2008 07:31 PM | PERMALINK

This seems unreal, but Obama carried Guam by only 7 votes. Obama was looking for a big win to bolster his campaign against his opponent, Hillary Clinton, who has won the last 4 primaries, but such a tiny win ain't gonna do it. Even though it seems as though Obama should have won by more-due in part to Guam's proximity to Indonesia, where Obama lived as a child, and because this was a caucus, a contest that favors Obama- this hardly gives Clinton bragging rights. Looks like we'll have to wait for...

  • Edwards strategist thinks his candidate could have won

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 01 2008 07:56 PM | PERMALINK

Joe Trippi believes his candidate, John Edwards could have forced a brokered convention if he stayed in the race, perhaps even winning the nomination. Is there any validity to this? Did Edwards even have the money to continue? It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure if hindsight is even 20-20 in this case.

    From the Huffington Post:

Joe Trippi writes about what he wishes he would have told John Edwards:
I didn't tell him what I should have told him: That I had this feeling that if he...
