  • Dodd's Loss is the Party's Gain

POSTED BY JONATHAN BACKER, JANUARY 05 2008 11:25 AM | PERMALINK

First off, major kudos to the household pictured above for correctly identifying the outcome of the Iowa caucuses. We all stand in awe of your omniscience. Now, onward, to brief wrap-up of my account of the first leg of the nomination process.

Naturally, the Dodd campaign was disappointed with the outcome. Surprisingly, 97% of the state delegates went to the three top-tier candidates after viability was determined. Governor Richardson and Joe Biden beat out Senator Dodd in gaining the remaining 3%...

  • Retail Politics Come Down to the Wire in Dubuque, Iowa

POSTED BY JONATHAN BACKER, JANUARY 01 2008 06:13 AM | PERMALINK

Dubuque, Iowa is a small city separated from Illinois and Wisconsin by the Mississippi River, with a large Irish-Catholic population. With two Irish-Catholic candidates in the Democratic caucus – Senators Biden and Dodd – a piqued battle for fourth place has picked up steam in the campaign’s final days.

The reigning perception around the state is that there are four tickets to New Hampshire and beyond in this primary contest, meaning that the dynamics of the race leave Governor Richardson, Biden and...

On Thursday, undecided voters, supporters, and press crowded into the family room of Des Moines contractor Fred Hubbell to watch Senator Dodd’s live interview on MSNBC’s Olbermann Report. Dodd provided an analysis of the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Dodd’s long relationship with Bhutto positioned him as a candidate able to thoughtfully discuss the assassination’s implications on U.S. foreign policy. On the show, Dodd took a swipe at Governor...

  • A Nod to Dodd: Pounding Pavement for Connecticut’s Senior Senator

POSTED BY JONATHAN BACKER, DECEMBER 27 2007 12:01 AM | PERMALINK

Well, armchair punditry really got its Christmas wish this year: a deadlocked Presidential nomination race for both parties. But despite all of the prognostication, hand-wringing, and poll scrutinizing, one thing everyone can agree on is that the candidate for whom I am working – Senator Chris Dodd – doesn’t have to worry about writing a victory speech. The most recent American Research Group, Inc. poll found that only 2% of likely Democratic caucus voters would be supporting Senator Dodd. With few

  • Dodd Did It! FISA bill shelved until next year

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, DECEMBER 18 2007 02:54 PM | PERMALINK

After ten hours of defending our civil liberties Senator Chris Dodd was informed that the FISA bill would be shelved until next year. He gave this awesome closing speech, saying he would be prepared to return next year and filibuster any bill that offers retroactive telecom immunity, just as he was prepared to go for thirty hours yesterday. He also thanked Reid for not using the powers he had available to shut Dodd up at an earlier point.

    Thank you, Chris Dodd:

    So until the bill returns,...

  • Dodd heads filibuster on FISA bill

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, DECEMBER 17 2007 04:19 PM | PERMALINK

"The President has said that American lives will be sacrificed if Congress does not change FISA. But he has also said that he will veto any FISA bill that does not grant retro-active immunity. No immunity, no FISA bill. So if we take the President at his word, he's willing to let Americans die to protect the phone companies." - Ted Kennedy on the Senate floor

The uproar over the FISA bill has begun, and, well, I was hoping for more of an uproar. Senator Chris Dodd is filibustering the...

    Highlight Reel: Drexel Democratic Debate

The Democratic candidates (save Mike Gravel, whom MSNBC chose to bar for failing to meet certain polling requirements) took the stage Tuesday night at Drexel University in Philadelphia. It was the first debate since Senators Obama and Edwards had vowed to take more aggressive aim at their frontrunning opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton. Did she survive the onslaught? And what does everyone think about Iran? Find out all the answers in today's Debate Highlight Reel...
