  • Elizabeth Edwards may support Hillary in N.C.

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 22 2008 11:38 PM | PERMALINK

Elizabeth Edwards may show up at one of Hillary Clinton's events in North Carolina, according to Newsweek's Howard Fineman. Fineman said he didn't think John Edwards would endorse either candidate, however.

This news comes after a stunning 10 percentage point victory in Pennsylvania for Clinton over Obama, despite Clinton being outspent in Pennsylvania 3-1. Since the Pa. win was declared, MSNBC reports that the Clinton campaign has raised $2.5 million in just a few hours.

    Regardless, Clinton's path to...

  • Did Obama blow his chances at an Edwards endorsement?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 31 2008 01:42 PM | PERMALINK

Here's an interesting and even-handed article from New York Magazine explores the Democratic race. Salon is blogging about the article, and highlighting a very insightful passage about why Edwards hasn't endorsed:

"In the days after John Edwards's withdrawal from the Democratic race, the political world expected his endorsement of Barack Obama would be forthcoming tout de suite. The neo-populist and the hopemonger had spent months tag-teaming Hillary Clinton, pillorying her as a creature of...

  • What Do You Think?

POSTED BY JOSH MARSHALL, JANUARY 30 2008 03:24 PM | PERMALINK

What do you think? Assuming he doesn't quickly endorse one candidate or the other, who does Edwards' exit help? There are some number crunching arguments that it helps Hillary -- with the three candidates to split delegates in states where they're alloted by district, the highest vote getter gets marginally few delegates than with two candidates. Yet another point to consider, is that with Edwards in there was a decent chance you could come into the convention with Hillary with most delegates but not...

  • Edwards to drop out

POSTED BY CHRIS BROUSSARD, JANUARY 30 2008 11:11 AM | PERMALINK

John Edwards is expected to end his Presidential campaign this afternoon.  He'll make the announcement in a speech in New Orleans, where he announced his candidacy last year.  CNN reports that he is not dropping out due to his wife's health.  He will endorse neither Obama not HIllary at this time.

Edwards came in a distance third (again) in Florida yesterday.  He hasn't been able to break about 15% since his second place finish in Iowa.  Edwards was also the only of the three major Democratic...

  • Immigration Policy Confusing?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 25 2008 11:13 AM | PERMALINK

It can be for us, too. A new video from The UpTake's Corrine McDermid takes an on-the-ground look at America's immigration problem: five days in grueling desert conditions with no water, to start. For more information on where the candidates stand on immigration:

Hillary Clinton on immigration: I am proud of America's commitment to welcoming immigrants. We are all immeasurably enriched by the contributions of immigrants who have come to this country to find the American dream through...

  • Do Candidates Overlook the Poor?

POSTED BY ROSEMARY PENNINGTON, JANUARY 18 2008 01:08 PM | PERMALINK

“Screw the middle classes, I will never accept them”.

This election cycle, that line from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” has been running through my head – not because I think the middle class crunch is unimportant, but because there’s another segment of society that seems to have been overlooked by the big dogs running for both the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations.

    You know.  The poor.

And if you read Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith’s post this morning about the poor getting poorer, you’ll...

  • Fixin' to Head to Low Country, Y'all

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 09 2008 03:03 PM | PERMALINK

Now through the New Hamshire loop, John Edwards, South Carolina's "Native Son," and the other candidates still in the race are making their way down to South Carolina. With a primary on Jan. 19, this battleground state will be hosting not only the campaigns but also a Republican debate Thursday organized by the state's Republican Party and FOX News.

This will be a defining moment for Giuliani who, having skipped major efforts in Iowa and New Hampshire, will be looking to get a win before he...

  • Edwards Accepts Third, Guarantees A Fight

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 08 2008 10:25 PM | PERMALINK

In his typical manner, Edwards championed the working class of America and challenged the 99 percent of America yet to vote to make their voices heard in the coming weeks in his speech tonight in New Hampshire.  He guaranteed a fight to the finish - all the way to the convention - and made clear that he's in it to win it.

Meanwhile, with 63 percent of the precincts reporting, Clinton retains her slight edge... about five thousand votes with college towns yet to vote.
