  • From sizzle to fizzle. Thompson out.

Live by the Shamble, Die by the Shamble

As you can see, Fred Thompson is now officially out of the GOP primary race. You can read his statement here. I thought it was worth pointing out though how hilariously Fred has managed to have his departure be as lackadaisical and delayed as was his entrance into the race.

As you can remember, Thompson fiddled and waited and yawned and dawdled, eventually going through something like two or three campaign managers before even getting in the race. And here it's...

  • Thompson Press Release: Huckabee a Court Jester. Also, What NIE?

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, DECEMBER 05 2007 11:07 AM | PERMALINK

For weeks now, the Huckabee thread of the campaign narrative has been that the stronger he gets, the more intense the scrutiny he’ll face from the press and his republican rivals.

Now that he’s pulled ahead in Iowa, the obvious tactic—and it ain’t hard—is to portray Huck as being that kid who runs for class president by being real nice to everyone and making a good natured ass of himself when necessary.

Well, here’s a snippet of a Thompson press release Politico’s Jonathan Martin posted...

  • As Huckabee Rises in Iowa, So Do Questions About His Record

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, NOVEMBER 22 2007 12:00 AM | PERMALINK

Mike Huckabee is now running close to even with frontrunner Mitt Romney in Iowa, having surpassed Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and John McCain in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

If Romney and the others don’t look too worried, it’s for good reason.

Huckabee’s gotten this far because he’s got the God cred the other’s lack (nothing against Mormons, Mitt!) and a knack for one-line zingers that some mistake for down home charm.  But now that he’s running with the big boys, he’s got...

  • Thompson to Get Right to Life Endorsement.

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, NOVEMBER 13 2007 09:19 AM | PERMALINK

Well, Fred Thompson’s campaign registered a pulse again Monday as he prepared to pick up a coveted endorsement from the National Right to Life Committee. Easy as Sunday morning, right Fred?

So, now that Giuliani, McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Thompson all have someone behind them it’s very clear that, er, well. . . . It’s clear the republicans still don’t have a white horse candidate to rally the religious base.

And it’s clear that the folks at the NRLC don’t hear the same heraldic voices that...

Sunday Show Roundup: GOP '08: Feel the Excitement!!!

Tomorrow night the Republican presidential candidates will debate in Dearborn, Michigan - the first debate of the full Fred-Thompson-included GOP field. With Thompson's feeble performance on the campaign trail thus far, Rudy Giuliani's fundamental obstacles in winning over the religious right wing of the party, and Mitt Romney's, well, chronic Mitt Romneyism, we thought we'd check the enthusiasm temperature of the Republican party. Catch the GOP '08...

Sunday Show Roundup: Mitt Romney, Come on Down!

Mitt Romney handily won Saturday's Iowa Straw Poll, thanks in large measure to the non-participation of his main contenders, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson. In our Sunday Show Roundup we get reaction from the victorious Romney himself, and the Sunday pundits tell him what he's won.
