  • At NPR Dem Debate, It's All About Iran

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, DECEMBER 05 2007 08:48 AM | PERMALINK

Fireworks sparked over the NIE-focused Democratic attention on the problem (problem?) in Iran at the NPR/Iowa Public Radio radio-only debates Tuesday. The report reverses the commonly held assumption that Iran has actively been working on a nuclear weapon and focuses new attention on the details of diplomatic engagement with the Islamic state.

Hillary Clinton expressed relief at the findings and called on W to "pursue diplomacy" with Iran, but she was criticized by her fellow dems for that September...

  • About That Nuclear Threat... Nevermind

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, DECEMBER 03 2007 02:56 PM | PERMALINK

Ahh, the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad Iranian Nuclear Threat. It was bound to run its course - thankfully, a slightly shorter one than that which paved the way for WMD-mania. And - rest easy, America - our own trusty intelligence agencies have concluded that Iran has no nuclear program after all. Just like they've been telling us for the last four years.

"U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and that the threat of international sanctions...

    Pleasure Reading

Remember John Bolton? The neocon installed at the State Department to keep Colin Powell under control and then later given a recess appointment to be US Ambassador. I could give you a list of particulars but suffice it to say that Bolton was a key factor in basically all the Bush White House's most disastrous decisions and he's still got the Iran war coming up. Now he's back on the airwaves with a new book and the ear of a certain Republican presidential candidate who's running on his...

  • Sarkozy earns the nickname 'l'Américain'

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, NOVEMBER 07 2007 01:56 PM | PERMALINK

Sarkozy announced that his goal for this trip was to "reconquer America's heart." If America is judged by the House and Senate, then reconquer he did. Unlike his predecessor Chirac, Sarkozy made it incredibly clear he is allied with American interest in world affairs. His promises weren't just idyllic, as he made some very clear statements about the French engagement in Afghanistan:

"Let me tell you solemnly today, France will remain engaged in Afghanistan as long as it takes, because what's at...

  • Americans favor bombing Iran

POSTED BY MARC BOXSER, NOVEMBER 05 2007 04:51 PM | PERMALINK

In case you missed it- a Zogby pole last week showed that 52% of Americans favor bombing Iran- in order to prevent their building a nuclear weapon. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that 53% believe that it is likely that the US will strike Iran before then next Presidential election. (Especially as the IAEA believes Iran is at least 5 years away from a weapon.)

  • The Issue of Iran takes Center-Stage

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, NOVEMBER 05 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

The US sanctions against Iran have reached a new level: halting of humanitarian aid through the World Bank.

The World Bank, newly caught up in the Bush administration’s campaign against Iran, has had to suspend payments for earthquake relief, sanitation and other projects there in response to new American sanctions on leading Iranian banks, World Bank officials say.

These new sanctions are announced as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German chancellor Angela Merkel prepare for their...

  • Monday Morning Must-Reads

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, OCTOBER 29 2007 08:50 AM | PERMALINK

Rudy a Lefty?  Yeah, Right.  [WaPo]    It starts out like this: "If you like President Bush, you'll love a President Giuliani."  And it's worth reading on - namely because half the people I know who have spent the last eight years viciously complaining have actually said they wouldn't mind a President Giuliani.  As a New Yorker, the whole idea of it makes me shiver.  And this strange split is just what David Greenberg picked up on.  "You wouldn't know it from reading the papers, but the favorite to...

Sunday Show Roundup: The Rhetoric of Iran

Ratchet it up? Turn it down? With such a jumbled mess of real concerns and uncertain threats characterizing the current situation in Iran, it's difficult to know exactly what level of frenzied rhetoric will cultivate the best outcome. We aim to provide a helpful consumer's guide in today's Sunday Show Roundup episode of TPMtv.

    Rudy's Four Horsemen

Maybe you love Rudy or maybe you hate him. But whatever you may think of him, check out his foreign policy team, because that's the key to knowing what to expect from a Rudy presidency. Especially for candidates with little or no foreign policy experience of their own, the folks advising the candidate are key. And Rudy's team is made up, more or less, of all the guys who were too nuts or too extreme to make the cut with George W. Bush. If you really, really want to go to war with...

Sunday Show Roundup: Talking About Spreading War

Getting bored with Iraq? Nothing ever changes? Well, how about war with Iran? The drumbeat for military action against Iran has been a low rumble building gradually throughout the year. We gauge just how high the pitch has risen in today's Sunday Show Roundup episode of TPMtv.
