  • Huckabee calls it quits

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 04 2008 09:20 PM | PERMALINK

Huckabee gives concession speech, acknowledging that McCain has most likely clinched the GOP nomination. He touted the civility of the Republican nomination process, a soft jab at the Dems, saying: "I'd rather lose an election than lose the principles that got me into politics in the first place."

Now, Huckabee hopes to help unite the party behind McCain. Something tells me this won't be the last we've seen of him....

  • Campaigns in metaphorical motion

POSTED BY MICHAEL ROSTON, FEBRUARY 12 2008 12:28 PM | PERMALINK

Sometimes, the metaphors just invent themselves. From CNN's Political Ticker:

Thirteen miles from Dulles International Airport, the Huckabee press van carrying reporters from Washington D.C. to the airport for a flight to Little Rock, Arkansas ground to a halt on the side of the highway, out of gas.

The driver turned the key over and over, desperately hoping that the gas needle firmly set on ‘E’ was wrong. The staffer in charge of wrangling the press called ahead to let the campaign know what had...

  • Huckabee Addresses His Fans

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 05 2008 10:07 PM | PERMALINK

In Little Rock, AK, Huckabee addressed his crowd and quipped that for the last few weeks, everyone's been calling it a two-man race - "well it is, and we're in it!" And in some ways he's right. He was wildly written off, but his heavy dose of Christianity and clever spoken charisma have given him some power in certain parts of the country, namely, Dixie. And in the heart of God's Country, he wasn't shy on the metaphors. Tonight he proved, he said, that "one small smooth stone is more effective than a...

  • Hillary and Huckabee Take No Chances in Arkansas Primaries

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, FEBRUARY 05 2008 09:06 AM | PERMALINK

Mike Huckabee and Hillary Rodham Clinton are expected to clean up in today’s Arkansas primaries, with 47 delegates available on the Democratic side and 34 for the Republicans.

By all accounts, the hometown advantage seems to be paying off for both of them with mid-December polls showing Hillary leading the Dems with 57% and Huckabee ahead with 59%. And while no one ever expected Arkansas to reflect the dead heat of the national picture on either side, these two are not about to risk an...

  • "We Need God in Our Government"

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 04 2008 03:26 PM | PERMALINK

More from our Ground Hound Chuck Olsen as he travels down South on his Southern Fried Super Tuesday tour.... These Christian fundamentalists in Lynchburg, Tennessee explain why they're supporting Mike Huckabee for president, their misguided ideas about Barack Obama and the Qu'ran, the Iraq War, President Bush, the wrath of God that protects Israel, and, of course, End Times.

  • Huckabee Takes Money from Stem Cell, Contraception, Gun Control Groups

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, DECEMBER 28 2007 05:09 PM | PERMALINK

Mike Huckabee has already let us know that he wants to be a president for all Americans--not just the ones who share his brand of evangelical social conservatism.

And if you are one of the millions of Americans who is gay or believes in gun laws or stem cell research or birth control, the Huckster has a message for you:  your money spends just as good as that of the righteous.  Don't believe it?  Just write him a check.

Here's this from a Politico story filed today by Kenneth P. Vogel:

    Mike...

  • Romney Can't Find Christmas Values, Only Spars with Polished Preacher

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, DECEMBER 19 2007 09:56 AM | PERMALINK

Mike Huckabee, the preacher (but not seminarian... controversy!), has Christmas down pat at this point. And so it's no surprise that his latest political ad includes garland, all manner of ornaments, and a blue spruce.

But what is surprising is that Mitt Romney's doesn't. (Wasn't he just telling us that Mormons are Christian too?) Romney has spent his latest advertising dollars not on his well wishes to the Christian Right on their favorite holiday (no presents are exchanged on the ...

  • Thompson Press Release: Huckabee a Court Jester. Also, What NIE?

POSTED BY KEVIN BRANNON, DECEMBER 05 2007 11:07 AM | PERMALINK

For weeks now, the Huckabee thread of the campaign narrative has been that the stronger he gets, the more intense the scrutiny he’ll face from the press and his republican rivals.

Now that he’s pulled ahead in Iowa, the obvious tactic—and it ain’t hard—is to portray Huck as being that kid who runs for class president by being real nice to everyone and making a good natured ass of himself when necessary.

Well, here’s a snippet of a Thompson press release Politico’s Jonathan Martin posted...

  • What the Huck

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, NOVEMBER 30 2007 08:40 AM | PERMALINK

The Anti-Immigration Right doesn't have its candidate yet, but they are sure who it isn't: Mike Huckabee.  At this point, you've probably intuited my infatuation and realized that I heart Huckabee, I just hate his policy.  Except on this one.

    Huck at the debates:
"Our country is better than that, to punish children for what their parents did in breaking the law. If that costs me the election, it costs me the election, but somewhere along the line we cannot just pander to the anger and hostility without...

  • Yes, Virginia, There Is a Constitution

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, NOVEMBER 29 2007 01:43 PM | PERMALINK

No independent thought for Virginia Republicans, at least if the state Republican party has their way. According to The Roanoke Times, "the Republican party has no interest in thoughtful voters. It only wants mindless party loyalists who will vote Republican no matter what." The slam is their response to the new VA GOP policy that was approved by the State Board of Elections earlier this week: if you want to vote in the primary, you must sign a loyalty oath swearing your intent to vote in November...
