  • Obama wins the Guam caucuses by just 7 votes

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 03 2008 07:31 PM | PERMALINK

This seems unreal, but Obama carried Guam by only 7 votes. Obama was looking for a big win to bolster his campaign against his opponent, Hillary Clinton, who has won the last 4 primaries, but such a tiny win ain't gonna do it. Even though it seems as though Obama should have won by more-due in part to Guam's proximity to Indonesia, where Obama lived as a child, and because this was a caucus, a contest that favors Obama- this hardly gives Clinton bragging rights. Looks like we'll have to wait for...

  • Edwards strategist thinks his candidate could have won

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 01 2008 07:56 PM | PERMALINK

Joe Trippi believes his candidate, John Edwards could have forced a brokered convention if he stayed in the race, perhaps even winning the nomination. Is there any validity to this? Did Edwards even have the money to continue? It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure if hindsight is even 20-20 in this case.

    From the Huffington Post:

Joe Trippi writes about what he wishes he would have told John Edwards:
I didn't tell him what I should have told him: That I had this feeling that if he...

  • Obama repudiates Wright

POSTED BY MALCOLM RAY, APRIL 29 2008 03:49 PM | PERMALINK

The love affair is over. Obama, speaking in North Carolina today categorically repudiated Rev. Wright: "The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the black church. They certainly don't portray accurately my values and beliefs. And if Rev. Wright thinks that that's political posturing,...

  • Is Rev. Wright Obama's "personal cross"?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 28 2008 05:10 PM | PERMALINK

This morning's stirring speech by Rev. Wright, which was followed by an interesting Q&A, was not to be missed. Here's a full transcript of the event or watch it here. There's no question that Wright is an intelligent man, who is passionate and well respected by many in his community, but the man dug a canyon for Obama today. Not only did Wright speak of the differences between African-Americans and European-Americans, (that's what he calls whites), driving a bigger wedge in the electorate for...

  • The audacity of Elizabeth Edwards

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 28 2008 03:49 PM | PERMALINK

Before I write about today's big Rev. Wright story, I have to highlight Elizabeth Edwards' op-ed in this weekend's New York Times. It may seem a bit ironic to praise an article that is critical of the media and the kind of yellow journalism that seems to thrive day in and day out--mostly because we are all guilty of reveling in it--but I'm going to do it anyway.

We've all whined about how the coverage of the Dem race has often veered away from the issues, regardless of whom you support for...

  • An op-ed from the Clinton campaign

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 25 2008 07:42 PM | PERMALINK

In an op-ed published in the Washington Post, Clinton strategist Geoff Garin defends his campaign, and asserts that it has been the Obama camp that has fought dirty in this election. After providing some examples, Garin concludes the following:

The bottom line is that one campaign really has engaged in a mean-spirited, unfair character attack on the other candidate -- but it has been Obama's campaign, not ours. You would be hard-pressed to find significant analogues from our candidate, our senior...

  • Has “Yes we can” become “No she can’t”?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 25 2008 03:30 PM | PERMALINK

In today’s New York Times, Paul Krugman takes a critical look at why Obama has yet to win over white working class voters. It is this very problem that keeps Obama from winning those big important states. But why can't Obama get those votes?

Krugman sweeps the notion under the rug that Hillary Clinton’s negative campaigning is the reason Barack Obama keeps falling short.

According to many Obama supporters, it’s all Hillary’s fault. If she hadn’t launched all those vile, negative attacks on their...

  • Michigan may be Clinton's key to victory

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 24 2008 06:38 PM | PERMALINK

While Hillary Clinton was sewing up a win in Pennsylvania, she was also clandestinely amassing delegates in Michigan. In an op-ed, the Detroit News asserts that none of the remaining states will decide this race, and it is because of this, that Michigan will be Clinton’s secret weapon. Detroit Free News:

On Aug. 25, Clinton will march into the national convention in Denver stronger than most people realize, thanks to her aggressive ground game in Michigan.

    Buoyed by party elder support,...

    Clinton's New Math

Your Daily Politics Video Blog: With the pledged delegate lead now out of reach, the Clinton campaign is focused on the popular vote.
