When I tuned in to watch the democrats debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday, I was expecting a big night for Barack Obama. I just felt it in my gut. After all, he’s ahead in the polls, which we have already forgotten not to trust. And I had already laughed myself sore earlier in the day watching the ‘first black president’ snoozing through a Martin Luther King Jr. Day sermon at a Baptist church in Harlem—itself an ironic postscript to the week of racial innuendo that preceded it.
