Pakistan has been volatile since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and parties on all sides of the conflict are debating the best course of action. Al Qaeda is reportedly flooding the disrupted country, hoping to influence the elections set for February 18 by recruiting new extremists and threatening voters.

In response to the growing confusion in Pakistan and the increasing Al Qaeda threat, there are reports the US is considering a new cover operations push to stabilize the country.

    But...

  • Bhutto planned to meet with Specter and Kennedy day of assassination

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, JANUARY 02 2008 08:08 AM | PERMALINK

Bhutto chose to meet with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-PA., and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I. She reportedly felt safer handing over the intelligence to senators she felt were supportive of her cause as opposed to the Bush administration she felt...

On Thursday, undecided voters, supporters, and press crowded into the family room of Des Moines contractor Fred Hubbell to watch Senator Dodd’s live interview on MSNBC’s Olbermann Report. Dodd provided an analysis of the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Dodd’s long relationship with Bhutto positioned him as a candidate able to thoughtfully discuss the assassination’s implications on U.S. foreign policy. On the show, Dodd took a swipe at Governor...

  • Who was Benazir Bhutto?

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, DECEMBER 27 2007 03:10 PM | PERMALINK

The blogs and papers are filling up with stories of the assassinated Bhutto, and the only thing certain is that people do not agree on her past, nor on Pakistan's future. For some, her death is apparently the end to a Bush-implanted Westernized woman who only served to further destabilize Pakistan. To others, the murder of Bhutto is the loss of the best chance Pakistan had at escaping tyranny. So, Veracifier hopes to cover a brief history of Benazir's very complicated and controversial past.

  • Benazir Bhutto Killed

POSTED BY KRISTIN LINDER, DECEMBER 27 2007 09:58 AM | PERMALINK

Witnesses report she was fired upon by a gunman at close range, then also a victim to the following explosion. Obviously the attackers did not want a repeat of October, when Ms. Bhutto survived a suicide attack.

The story is just breaking, but Veracifier will stay updated as the situation develops. The death of Ms. Bhutto is sure to be a destabilizing force in volatile Pakistan.

Sunday Show Roundup: The Devil You Know

Over the weekend President Pervez Musharraf declared a State of Emergency in Pakistan, instituting martial law, suspending the constitution, and firing the chief justice of the supreme court. Police have also begun rounding up scores of lawyers, judges, and activists, and the state has taken control of many of the private television stations and raided newspaper offices. This puts the Bush administration in a nearly impossible bind: oppose a Musharraf dictatorship...
