  • Obama hits the mark

POSTED BY TIM SHEY, JUNE 03 2008 10:42 PM | PERMALINK

Obama clinched the critical delegate count today, and our friends at The Uptake are there, covering live. Watch the speech live or archived in the embedded player below at a slightly different angle than the televised speech, from their live cam at the event. Read the full text of the speech on TPM Election Central.

Meanwhile, our friends at TPM watched McCain's "prerebuttal" to Obama's speech, and say it's a "frighteningly sad" performance. As Josh Marshall writes:

    ...I'm curious to hear...

  • Edwards still says 'no' to VP slot

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 16 2008 02:21 PM | PERMALINK

After the big Edwards endorsement, the man himself, John Edwards, flatly denied that he would run with Barack Obama. He didn't speculate on a possible Attorney General position, however. From CNN:

(CNN) — Seeing John Edwards and Barack Obama on the same stage earlier this week left political pundits buzzing: Could these two be an unbeatable presidential ticket?

They appeared to have natural chemistry — something Edwards and then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry seemed to lack in 2004...

  • Previewing tomorrow's W.Va primary

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MAY 12 2008 03:43 PM | PERMALINK

It looks as though Hillary Clinton is well-positioned for a big win in Tuesday's West Virginia primary, according to polls. The latest poll coming out of the state has her up 36 percentage points over Barack Obama. With daunting math in front of her, and the media already crowning Obama, what significance might tomorrow's contest have on the nomination battle? CNN's Bill Schneider writes that a huge win could send a message to superdelegates that a lot Dems are not ready to join team Obama. It...

  • Chelsea goes on a gay bar crawl in Philly, gets groped

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 21 2008 04:42 PM | PERMALINK

Chelsea Clinton and Pa. Gov. Ed Rendell went gay bar hopping in Philly in order to drum up support for Hillary. Literally stopping traffic, Chelsea was surrounded by fans and even groped by a young woman. From MSNBC's First Read:

Led around the neighborhood by Gov. Ed Rendell, Chelsea was mobbed by local gays and lesbians, as she walked from one club to the next. They ran up to hug her, posed for pictures and certainly invaded her personal space.

“I grabbed her ass,” one young woman exclaimed to...

  • Did Obama make another misstep?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 21 2008 03:14 PM | PERMALINK

The Hill reports that Obama said Sunday: "You have a real choice in this election. Either Democrat would be better than John McCain,” Obama said during an event in Pennsylvania, as quoted by the Associated Press. Then he added: "And all three of us would be better than George Bush."

Even though Obama's comments are hardly a McCain endorsement, some are calling this a "slip-up" that may have potential general election ramifications. Clinton jumped on this during a speech in Pennsylvania, saying: "We...

  • Both Dems virtually tied with McCain

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 02 2008 01:20 PM | PERMALINK

Here's a look at over 19,000 responses from Gallup, which yielded some expected, yet interesting, demographic results. From the Baltimore Sun:

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are virtually tied with Republican John McCain in national daily tracking polls that Gallup has been running, but an analysis of nearly 20,000 interviews conducted over the course of the month of March reveals the strengths that each holds among different voters.

“At this point….there would appear not to be a...

  • It's none of your business....

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 26 2008 03:18 PM | PERMALINK

Stumping for her mother, Chelsea Clinton was asked if her mother's credibility was hurt by the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The 28-year-old former first daughter sounded a little stunned, replying:

"Wow, you're the first person actually that's ever asked me that question in the, I don't know maybe, 70 college campuses I've now been to,'' she paused, "and I do not think that is any of your business."

What do we think of this? It's the first time I've heard anything "personal" from Chelsea. The question...

  • Clinton says she "misspoke" re: Bosnia trip

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 25 2008 01:31 PM | PERMALINK

One of today's big stories is that Hillary Clinton is admitting she "misspoke" about her trip to war-torn Bosnia when she was first lady. Originally, she described the trip to be more dangerous than her press corps remembered. For example, Clinton said her plane landed under sniper fire. This is a rare mistake by Clinton. Here's more. This story seems to have legs, but I'm not sure it will do too much damage. We shall see...

  • How Clinton can still win

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 24 2008 02:48 PM | PERMALINK

Ever since Iowa, it seems like the media has been calling for Sen. Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race. She’s bounced back several times—even after a winless streak in February, only to carry Texas, Rhode Island and Ohio the following month.

Now that the Jeremiah Wright story seems to be fading, the media is back to counting Clinton out. Clinton’s political death is always a good back-up story for the talking heads to dissect ad nauseam.

But in all seriousness, with the apparent Florida and...
