  • Poll shows gender harder to overcome than race

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 19 2008 02:18 PM | PERMALINK

Another interesting article from Slate shows that 39 percent of voters polled by CBS think that a female candidate would "face more obstacles in presidential politics today," as compared with 33 percent who believe a black candidate would.

The poll shows that "42 percent of voters believe that Hillary Clinton has been judged more harshly on account of her gender, while only 27 percent think the same for Obama and his race."

Furthermore, "while 5 percent of voters say they would prefer to vote for a...

  • Obama on race circa 1990

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 19 2008 01:48 PM | PERMALINK

Below is a feature from the Chicago Reporter on Obama just before he graduated from Harvard Law School. In the article, he notes that with his credentials, he won't have a hard time finding a job, but wonders if minorities who must attend state schools due to financial constraints would have the right to be as "mediocre" as their white male classmates. • New Reuters/Zogby poll: Obama's lead evaporating

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 19 2008 01:02 PM | PERMALINK

Reuters/Zogby released a poll today that shows Obama's 14 point lead over Clinton in February shrinking to just three points, which is within the statistical margin of error.

Currently, Obama leads Clinton 47 to 44 percent. In a hypothetical matchup with Obama, McCain leads the Illinois senator 46 to 40. Last month, the poll showed Obama up seven points over McCain, or 47 to 40.

Matched up against Clinton, McCain leads 48 percent to 40 percent, narrower than his 50 to 38 percent advantage over her...

  • Resentment, race and the dream ticket

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 18 2008 02:32 PM | PERMALINK

Race and gender have been, and continue to be, the most provocative elements in this presidential race. From the race card and the gender card, to overzealous supporters, and controversial remarks, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have captured the country, not only with their political platforms, but also with their unique backgrounds

Obama’s speech today was not a culmination of the dialogue we’ve been engaged in for months, but a continuation of something that’s important to address. There’s...

  • Obama's pastor problem

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 14 2008 03:01 PM | PERMALINK

Controversial comments from Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, are coming back to haunt the presidential hopeful today. In an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Obama said he “profoundly” disagreed with some of the pastor’s statements, and noted that media is “cherry picking” quotes from Wright’s 40-year career. Read full interview here.

Wright’s remarks, which blame America for the 9/11 attacks based on “racist and violent policies,” certainly raised eyebrows, but it...

  • Obama's 'new politics' --just words?

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 07 2008 02:38 PM | PERMALINK

In the New York Times, David Brooks scrutinizes Obama’s ‘new politics,’ raising the question of whether Obama can play on Clinton’s level without sacrificing the heart of his campaign. If Obama “takes off the gloves,” as many of his advisers want him to, he exposes himself as a just another politician.

    David Brooks:

“These attacks are supposed to show that Obama can’t be pushed around. But, of course, what it really suggests is that Obama’s big theory is bankrupt. You can’t really win with the new...

  • Dispatch from Texas: What to expect today

POSTED BY CARLY WOODSEN, MARCH 04 2008 11:42 AM | PERMALINK

It's another nice Spring day in Austin, Texas, where it turns out that what happens today might not matter as much as you thought. Over sixty percent of the vote has already been cast, the Texas Monthly's BurkaBlog reported this morning:

CNN is reporting today that 60% of the vote in Texas has already been cast. This means that any local candidate who trails after the early vote will have a hard time overcoming their opponent's lead. Assume, for example, that 10,000 votes are going to be cast in a...

  • Obama: The Smiling Beast or Callow Anti-Christ in Training?

POSTED BY NICK JOHNSON, MARCH 04 2008 04:26 AM | PERMALINK

When I was a small child, I once had a nightmare in which I was Batman and The Joker was a perpetually smiling black guy in a suit. Fast forward 15 years later, and here's my nightmare in the form of Barack Obama manifested. There's is a comic written by Warren Ellis called Transmetropolitan. One of the antagonists in the comic is a politician, The President of The United States, called The Smiler. Barack Obama is pretty much a black version of this antagonist: a smooth talking, charismatic, morally...

  • Michelle Obama: Proud of her country

POSTED BY MARC BOXSER, FEBRUARY 19 2008 05:48 PM | PERMALINK

By now you are probably aware of the brewhaha: for the first time in her adult life Michelle Obama is really proud of her country.

Many conservatives are going crazy. Here is Brit Hume explaining that Michelle feels this way because she is "liberal":

Given that Michelle Obama's adult life has consisted entirely of Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush administrations, this doesn't seem such an odd statement for her to make in this campaign season. To me it seems a bit innocuous: "Yeah, things...
