  • James Kotecki Rounds Up the CA Debates

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 31 2008 11:58 AM | PERMALINK

What's better than McCain and Romney taking it to the weeds?  James Kotecki singing about it.  Great political round up, but where are the pencil puppets?

  • On The Trail With Barack Obama

POSTED BY CHRIS MCCAA, JANUARY 24 2008 11:02 AM | PERMALINK

As Barack Obama carves a path through the state of South Carolina, he leaves behind thousands of college co-eds who are “fired up and ready to go!”  Earlier this week, the Democratic candidate made a stop in Greenwood, South Carolina, the home of Lander University, where he was welcomed by frenzied supporters like the superstar he has become.  After waiting over two hours for his delayed arrival, the crowd exploded with a roar as the Presidential hopeful took the stage amidst the blaring sounds...

  • Muscling Their Way Into Another 8 Years?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 23 2008 09:26 AM | PERMALINK

Are Hillary and Bill muscling their way into another eight years?  "They're doing it methodically, ruthlessly, and with enormous energy," reports  Newt Gingrich, otherwise known as the Biggest Clinton Fan Since Dick Morris.

  • Do Candidates Overlook the Poor?

POSTED BY ROSEMARY PENNINGTON, JANUARY 18 2008 01:08 PM | PERMALINK

“Screw the middle classes, I will never accept them”.

This election cycle, that line from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” has been running through my head – not because I think the middle class crunch is unimportant, but because there’s another segment of society that seems to have been overlooked by the big dogs running for both the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations.

    You know.  The poor.

And if you read Raleigh-Elizabeth Smith’s post this morning about the poor getting poorer, you’ll...

  • Women Are Never Front-Runners

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 16 2008 01:10 PM | PERMALINK

All this talk of Hillary today reminds me of an op-ed in last week's New York Times that one of my friends passed along to me - one by Gloria Steinem. If you haven't read it yet, take this opportunity to do so. While we're busy throwing around terms like the "race" and "gender card," it's important that we stop to think about what they really mean.

  • He's Not a Candidate (He's Just Feeling Out the Field)

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 15 2008 09:07 AM | PERMALINK

Michael Bloomberg is getting annoyed by all the questions. And now he says that any speculation of a presidential run is flat-out "ridiculous." In a press conference yesterday, a frustrated New York Mayor told reporters, "I've said this before. You would think that people would get tired of the answer. I'm not a candidate for president of the United States."

But in the world of news media, that doesn't mean he's not running, either.

Last week, a source close to the two-term mayor - a billionaire...

POLL: Transformed by Iowa and N.H., '08 Kicks Off as a Free-for-All

[ABC]     Iowa and New Hampshire have transformed the 2008 presidential race into a free-for-all, vaulting John McCain past longtime frontrunner Rudy Giuliani in the Republican contest and fueling a strong challenge to Hillary Clinton by Barack Obama among Democrats.

Leaving The Presidency Weaker Than When They Started
[FDL]    After all the secrecy and paranoia, the unilateral executive power grabs over things as inconsequential as...

  • Richardson Out

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 10 2008 12:10 PM | PERMALINK

After finishing fourth in both New Hampshire and Iowa, Bill Richardson is pulling out of the democratic race for president. An announcement is expected at some point today, the AP reports. His campaign never picked up more traction - an inconvenient reality for the Democratic party, which stood to benefit from a New Mexican governor in the contested West.

Richardson had one of the most wide-ranging CVs of any candidate ever to run for the presidency, bringing experience from his time in Congress,...

  • Kerry Backs Obama

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 10 2008 09:47 AM | PERMALINK

Barack Obama has won the support of Senator John Kerry, the AP reports this morning. While I'm sure Barack is thrilled to have the endorsement of the guy that couldn't beat Bush, I'd be holding out for someone who, say, actually has won office.

Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, plans to announce his support Thursday at a rally at the College of Charleston, said a Democrat familiar with Kerry's decision. The 2004 nominee will argue that Obama can best unite the country and has the potential to...

  • Fixin' to Head to Low Country, Y'all

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 09 2008 03:03 PM | PERMALINK

Now through the New Hamshire loop, John Edwards, South Carolina's "Native Son," and the other candidates still in the race are making their way down to South Carolina. With a primary on Jan. 19, this battleground state will be hosting not only the campaigns but also a Republican debate Thursday organized by the state's Republican Party and FOX News.

This will be a defining moment for Giuliani who, having skipped major efforts in Iowa and New Hampshire, will be looking to get a win before he...
