  • Obama Says Yes, He Still Can

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 09 2008 12:55 AM | PERMALINK

He might not have it signed, sealed, and delivered like his background music suggested, but Barack Obama has pledged to carry on after the disappointing New Hampshire primary results.

  • Dispatch from New Hampshire: Round-Up

POSTED BY STEVE DENNIS, JANUARY 08 2008 11:47 PM | PERMALINK

Today was a beautiful day in New Hampshire.

It was beautiful on two counts: First, we had a sunny, unseasonably warm day with temperatures reaching into the sixties. And second, today I had a chance to vote. I love waking up on an election day knowing I will be heading to the polls to cast a vote for my candidate. I feel pride as I walk into the town hall to fulfill what I consider to be one of the most important responsibilities an American citizen has - the privilege of selecting a leader. And...

  • Can the Nation Handle Another New York Mayor in the Race?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 08 2008 05:35 PM | PERMALINK

...  And is he even running?

It’s the question on everybody’s minds since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg hinted to the NY Sun in 2006 that a bid for the White House might be in his future.

The anti-establishment mayor’s non-campaign had its moment of glory yesterday, too, at a forum on “bipartisanship,” where he enjoyed comparing himself to the rest of the crop and coming out, of course, heads and shoulders above:

"There's no accountability today ... There is no willingness to focus on big...

  • Don’t Cry for Me, New Hampshire

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 08 2008 12:36 PM | PERMALINK

Or: Big Girls Don’t Cry (And Neither Did Hillary)

It’s the winter of her discontent: the caucuses are against her, the media’s against her, and now, she’s got the anti-emotion lobby on her case. Hillary Clinton wants to make the world a better place. What a sissy.

There’s no crying in baseball, and though widely reported that the Former First Lady and Candidate Caboose did just that yesterday, it turns out her eyes got a little wet but by jove, those cheeks stayed drier than an Arkansas summer...

  • Keeping Up With The Jonses: NH Edition

POSTED BY MICHAEL GSOVSKI, JANUARY 07 2008 06:21 PM | PERMALINK

With all the talk of change and groundswells sweeping the media (extending even to the talking heads on the Sunday morning shows), it's easy to forget that elections are something of a hassle. For New Hampshire, this is no exception. As a frenzy of last minute campaign activity snarls traffic, keeps phones ringing off the hook and ties up local rental cars after 23 million dollars worth of advertising blared in their faces for months, residents of the Granite State would have every right to have some...

  • Debate Porridge: Exclusions in NH

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 06 2008 08:55 PM | PERMALINK

A great video courtesy of The UpTake from the New Hampshire debates on Saturday.  Excluded candidates' supportes were out en masse - especially Ron Paul's.  And while they had a lot to say, Gravel watched the debate on TiVo... and noted other candidates' stances on Musharraf as "drivel" - probably the most grounded thing he's had to say in awhile.  Make sure you check out more from The UpTake and stay tuned for our next Ground Hounds video.

  • Dispatch from New Hampshire

POSTED BY STEVE DENNIS, JANUARY 06 2008 05:16 AM | PERMALINK

Before I get started I would like to introduce myself: My name is Steve Dennis and I live in the small town of Kingston in southern New Hampshire. I was asked to cover the New Hampshire primary,  so here I am. This will be Part One of my coverage, with Part Two coming after the New Hampshire results are in.  In the interest of full disclosure, I will be voting in the Republican primary, so while I have followed that race more closely, I will try to give an unbiased opinion.

    New Hampshire takes...

  • What is a Caucus?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 03 2008 05:11 PM | PERMALINK

Two hours to go and our friends to the west will be caucusing… but what does that even mean?

A caucus isn’t like a primary, where you get to walk into the booth and cast your private vote. It’s more like an old American town hall meeting – discussing politics and your opinions openly with your neighbors at the local library or church basement. And declaring a winner from a discussion - a caucus - is no easy business, especially in Iowa, where 1,993 different precincts will each host two meetings...

  • Retail Politics Come Down to the Wire in Dubuque, Iowa

POSTED BY JONATHAN BACKER, JANUARY 01 2008 06:13 AM | PERMALINK

Dubuque, Iowa is a small city separated from Illinois and Wisconsin by the Mississippi River, with a large Irish-Catholic population. With two Irish-Catholic candidates in the Democratic caucus – Senators Biden and Dodd – a piqued battle for fourth place has picked up steam in the campaign’s final days.

The reigning perception around the state is that there are four tickets to New Hampshire and beyond in this primary contest, meaning that the dynamics of the race leave Governor Richardson, Biden and...
