  • GOP tossing out journalists?

POSTED BY MALCOLM RAY, MAY 02 2008 11:07 AM | PERMALINK

Minnesota's Republican Party seems very camera-shy. Over the past several months Republicans have prevented journalists from recording their candidates at events. The latest incident was rather dramatic as Gavin Sullivan was tossed out of the Republican convention for district 42B for shooting video.

The Uptake shows us Gavin Sullivan's video and talks to another journalist who has been tossed out twice from Republican events. Here's Gavin Sullivan, a citizen journalist, trying to cover the Minnesota...

  • Death & Taxes

POSTED BY MARC BOXSER, APRIL 16 2008 09:57 AM | PERMALINK

If you consider yourself middle class, then you probably have a right to be upset about taxes. In Minnesota, when you include all local, state and federal taxes, you pay a higher proportion of your income in taxes than those who make more than $400,000 a year. And those who are poor pay a rate nearly twice as high as the rich.

The culprits for this disparity: a decade of tax cuts for the rich based upon the false belief that they trickle down to the rest of the economy, and tax hikes on the middle class...

  • More from Texas

POSTED BY MARC BOXSER, MARCH 04 2008 02:52 PM | PERMALINK

"Lobbying is the great evil of modern times" says Brandon Hodge, owner of two stores in Austin, Texas. His locally owned stores "Big Top Candy Shop" and "Monkey See Monkey Do" don't get a tax break from the Austin City Council, yet the council hands out tax breaks to large corporations.

As Texas votes today, Hodge explains why he doesn't pay attention to the commercials the candidates put out and why the candidates are not always at fault when there's "dirty tricks"

The UpTake’s Noah Kunin is in Texas talking to voters three days before that state’s primary and caucuses. What he’s finding is voters are not as enthusiastic as they were in the other states he’s visited. A sort of voter malaise. This pair of voters wants to find someone they can trust. But even then, they’re not sure if their votes will help anything.

Texas has a combination primary/caucus, sometimes called “The Texas Two-Step” for allocating its 193 delegates for the Democratic convention. A...

  • Why the Most Qualified People Don't Run for President

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 07 2008 11:21 AM | PERMALINK

Dwight Custer is an executive search consultant in Nashville, TN. He explains why our process for choosing a president has become more flawed, so the most qualified people for the job often stay out of the race. Newt Gingrich and Michael Bloomberg top his list of qualified leaders who would make excellent presidents, even Bill Frist.  [No coincidence given the neighborhood...]

Al Gore, however, does not make the cut.

Mr. Custer describes himself as an Independent but is registered as a...

  • Dispatch from Georgia

The forecast for Peachy weather today in Georgia looks to bring in a record number of voters for this exciting Super Tuesday event. The Candidates have shown their interest in Georgia, and State Republican's and Democrats alike are gun hoe to make their voices heard.

Since the last presidential election, there have been a confluence of major change in the State which should have a significant impact on the outcome of the primaries. Unfettered population growth and development followed by the recent...
