  • Michigan may be Clinton's key to victory

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 24 2008 06:38 PM | PERMALINK

While Hillary Clinton was sewing up a win in Pennsylvania, she was also clandestinely amassing delegates in Michigan. In an op-ed, the Detroit News asserts that none of the remaining states will decide this race, and it is because of this, that Michigan will be Clinton’s secret weapon. Detroit Free News:

On Aug. 25, Clinton will march into the national convention in Denver stronger than most people realize, thanks to her aggressive ground game in Michigan.

    Buoyed by party elder support,...

  • For some Americans, democracy is a promise unfulfilled

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 22 2008 02:11 PM | PERMALINK

That headline is the gist of today's editorial written by The New Republic entitled, "Voting block." The article takes a serious look at the disenfranchisement of not only Michigan and Florida voters, but also ex-felons, who in most states, cannot vote. What is striking is that some Dems. don't even seemed to be concerned about leaving out Michigan and Florida, despite the fact that 1 in 10 Americans hails from either state. Because it looks like Clinton is going to pull off a reasonable win...

  • Clinton calls for democracy, backed by a petition

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, APRIL 03 2008 02:34 PM | PERMALINK

In her quest to have Michigan and Florida's votes count, Hillary Clinton is going old school by presenting a petition to the powers that be. According to a spokesman at the Clinton campaign, over 100,000 people have already signed the document. The campaign is soliciting signatures on its website and also via an email sent to supporters. Here are some excerpts from the email:

It is a bedrock American principle: we are all equal in the voting booth. No matter where you were born or how much money you...

  • What Clinton will do about Michigan and Florida

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA STEIGRAD, MARCH 27 2008 04:17 PM | PERMALINK

I was flipping through the channels last night, and I saw Hillary Clinton being interviewed by Greta Van Susteren. In the interview, Clinton addressed several issues, (Bosnia, Rev. Wright, her policy differences with Obama), but the most interesting part came when she was asked about Michigan and Florida. Essentially, Clinton will go to the convention and fight the credentials committee if the two states are not counted/seated. Because the entire country was able to vote, so must Michigan and Florida,...

  • 2012: Let's Try Democracy

POSTED BY CHRIS BROUSSARD, MARCH 06 2008 02:29 PM | PERMALINK

So, in case you've been in a coma: America's not a very democratic place.  Our system of primaries and caucuses is absurd.  Fortunately, the closeness of the Democratic race may spur our elected and party officials to take a hard look at the circus they're running.

First, the completely arbitrary, nonsensical scheduling: Iowa and New Hampshire called dibs on being the first caucus and primary back in the 1950s, and for some reason we're honoring that?  The schedule is justified as a way to let...

Sunday Show Roundup: Rules, Rules, Rules

Your Daily Politics Video Blog: The Republicans' best hope in 2008 might just be the maddening debate raging within the Democratic Party over the rules governing super delegates and the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan. Who's playing by the rules, who's trying to change them mid-game, and how might the Democrats find a way to screw up 2008? We explore in today's Sunday Show Roundup episode of TPMtv.

  • Sharpton Threatens the DNC

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 15 2008 04:07 PM | PERMALINK

If things weren't already messy enough in DNC-ville, enter FOX News and that little disagreement between the NAACP and the mighty Rev. From NewsHounds:

In what Alan Colmes described in his scripted introduction as “a surprise twist” on Hannity & Colmes last night (2/14/08), Al Sharpton supposedly issued “a scathing indictment” against the NAACP for its support for recognizing the delegates from Michigan and Florida. As it turned out, Sharpton said he had spoken to NAACP head Julian Bond and...

  • Michigan GOP: Congrats, McCain!

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 16 2008 02:37 PM | PERMALINK

    ... we mean Romney. Oops.

Last night, the Michigan GOP sent out its standard congratulatory note to the primary's winner, only it seems they got the wrong guy. From the AP:

The Michigan Republican Party mistakenly sent out a news release Tuesday night congratulating John McCain for winning the state's GOP primary.

It quickly issued a second statement praising Mitt Romney for his win.

"Heading into tonight, this race was too close to call, so we prepared a release for either scenario," state...

  • Michigan: Lots of Snow and a Very Tight Race

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 15 2008 04:23 PM | PERMALINK

With nearly half a foot of snow on the ground and four hours left to vote, Michigan residents across the state are making their way to the polls, ID's in hand.  In addition to being a suddenly-contested primary, this is also the first time that Michigan will require its voters to present photo identification at the time of voting – much like the Indiana case that just appeared before the Supreme Court.  While we’re hours into the primary, all we know is that the race is tight.

    John McCain sought to...

    Mitt's Last Stand

It hasn't gotten that much press attention. But today's Michigan primary could decide the Republican nomination. Mitt Romney has staked everything on winning in Michigan, pulling funds out of South Carolina and Florida. And the polls have him neck-n-neck with the GOP's latest frontrunner John McCain. We'll be counting down the results live tonight at TPM. And in today's episode of TPMtv we give you a primer on what to expect.
