  • Dispatch from Texas: What to expect today

POSTED BY CARLY WOODSEN, MARCH 04 2008 11:42 AM | PERMALINK

It's another nice Spring day in Austin, Texas, where it turns out that what happens today might not matter as much as you thought. Over sixty percent of the vote has already been cast, the Texas Monthly's BurkaBlog reported this morning:

CNN is reporting today that 60% of the vote in Texas has already been cast. This means that any local candidate who trails after the early vote will have a hard time overcoming their opponent's lead. Assume, for example, that 10,000 votes are going to be cast in a...

  • NAFTA Super Highway Drives TX Votes

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 21 2008 02:21 PM | PERMALINK

Sometimes, Texas can't help it. People mess with 'em anyway. Especially when big business wants to build an even bigger highway in the TTC - the Trans-Texas Corridor. With 4,000 miles of new toll roads planned for the NAFTA Super HIghway, Texans are looking at $180 billion bill so that trucks from Mexico can take goods to the rest of the United States.

    It's like Cross-Bronx Expressway only (a) it's statewide and (b) it ain't burnin'.

Enter Ron Paul, saving babies and birthing mothers from Austin...

  • Utah, North Dakota Polls Closing

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 05 2008 09:49 PM | PERMALINK

The West is beginning to close up shop, and North Dakota caucus results are coming in.  Early returns indicate a win for Obama, a clear payout for his recent investment in the state.  The GOP polls there are not yet closed, but Ron Paul is expected to actually do well in North Dakota, the Bismark Tribuen reports.  Little word from Utah, stay tuned.

  • Romney-rama in Denver

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 05 2008 12:23 PM | PERMALINK

More from our Ground Hounds:  This time we ask, who are the folks in the overflow crowds when a presidential hopeful comes to town? These are some of the people who waited outside a Denver car dealership hoping for a chance to see Mitt Romney, even though they couldn't hear the speech.  Not a far cry from the Barack Obama rally also in Colorado?

  • The Drama: Who to Vote For!

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 05 2008 11:39 AM | PERMALINK

Since I can't browbeat the political reporters who are going to spend the rest of the day focusing on recession-depression make-me-want-to-cry economic policy, inevitably inaccurate exit polls, and highly improbable, thoroughly unofficial, legally-debatable presidential postulations, I offer Super Tuesday Salvation in its most basic form: Indecision 2008.

Because fun quizzes make everything better. And this one has me pinned dead on, although I never thought my grandmother's artichoke dip...

  • Super Tuesday Candidates Invade Colorado!

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, FEBRUARY 03 2008 09:33 PM | PERMALINK

Ah, Super [Duper Tsnumani] Tuesday.  Just around the corner.  And we have Ground Hounds across the country ready to get the story of what's really happening to you.  Like a lot of states, Colorado had its turn to host lots of politicians this week. Here's a roundup of events with Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, and internet favorite Ron Paul.  Either Obama or Clinton will get a bid, but it's Dr. Paul that walks away with a standing ovation.

  • Has FOX Forgotten Ron Paul?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 30 2008 01:23 PM | PERMALINK

In their two hours of primary coverage, FOX didn't mention Dr. Paul once... meanwhile, Giuliani, who's been behind Ron Paul in recent primaries, has been the talk of the town. With the recent Edwards pull-out, will Paul gain some speed? OpEd News thinks so:

This has been a tough week, with, first Dennis Kucinich and next John Edwards dropping out of the presidential race-- generally, the two candidates considered, in the order I listed them, the most progresssive. That leaves two Democratic...

  • Immigration Policy Confusing?

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 25 2008 11:13 AM | PERMALINK

It can be for us, too. A new video from The UpTake's Corrine McDermid takes an on-the-ground look at America's immigration problem: five days in grueling desert conditions with no water, to start. For more information on where the candidates stand on immigration:

Hillary Clinton on immigration: I am proud of America's commitment to welcoming immigrants. We are all immeasurably enriched by the contributions of immigrants who have come to this country to find the American dream through...

  • Giuliani: "Our Strategy Has Kinda Worked Out"

    POSTED BY RALEIGH-ELIZABETH SMITH, JANUARY 21 2008 03:51 PM | PERMALINK

He's gone from "I'll win Florida" to "we'll get a strong showing." And he's been beat by Ron Paul two times already. Proving that, at the very least, the Texas M.D. should take a shot at Gracie Mansion.

  • Paul rising, Rudy tanking

POSTED BY MARC BOXSER, JANUARY 19 2008 02:16 PM | PERMALINK

2.20pm: With just about everyone saying Romney has won Nevada, and with 1% of precincts reporting, could we be looking at a Ron Paul second finish, and Guiliani last? There is quite a fight for second place lining up:

McCain is polling 16% of the vote, Ron Paul 15%, Thompson 11%, Huckabee 9% and Giuliani a paultry 3%.
