It’s clear to anyone paying attention to the 2008 Republican Primary that Mitt Romney is the most recent in a long line of political aspirants with absolutely no idea why he is running for President. He’s the partisan inverse of John Edwards in 2004, a stand-for-absolutely-nothing mattress salesman who stumbled onto so much good fortune in the private sector that he eventually had no choice but to buy into his own bullshit.

When Norman Mailer passed away last weekend, it made sense that the ensuing conversation would be about almost everything but his writing. An editorial published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday – however complimentary – praised Mailer for not only owning his masculinity, but for constantly wearing it in the form of a very public persona.
